Sacred Heart Parish was established in Palm Desert in 1956 with Fr. A. G. Edwards as pastor. The original small church faced out on Deep Canyon Road and seated 350 people. It is now an integral part of the beautiful edifice built in 1986 that now dominates the campus and seats 1300.
In 1984 Sacred Heart School opened its doors to receive children in kindergarten and the first grade. The growing valley, coupled with a reputation for academic excellence offered in a nurturing religious environment, has blessed the parish with tremendous opportunities. The school now educates around 600 students from kindergarten to 8th grade and over 80 preschoolers. SHS was awarded the National Blue Ribbon Award for excellence in education in 2006 becoming the first school under the direction of the Office of Catholic Schools of the Diocese of San Bernardino to receive the award.
In June 2021, Father Gregory Elder, Ph.D. became pastor. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. For over 60 years, Sacred Heart Church continues serving God with a tradition of ministry and outreach to all in need. The Church is grateful and blessed to have such a vibrant and dedicated community who worship in English, Spanish, and Latin. Today, Sacred Heart Church serves over 6,000 families; approximately 9,000 people attend weekend masses in person and online; and more than 600 parishioners are active in ministry service, volunteer work, and outreach programs.
